Speaker Series: Travelling through History in Lehigh Gap with Martha Capwell Fox

December 10 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

“Travelling Through History in Lehigh Gap” — Martha Capwell Fox

Description: Join us in person at Lehigh Gap Nature Center for a Speaker Series presentation from Martha Capwell Fox, a historian for the National Canal Museum and the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor.

From the Lenape Nescopeck Path to the cantilevered Route 248, Lehigh Gap and the Lehigh River that flows through it have provided passage for travelers through the Kittatinny Ridge. Maps and historic photographs from the archives of the National Canal Museum/Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor will illustrate the progression of transportation through the Gap from the early 19th century to the present.

More about Martha: Growing up in Catasauqua, where she still lives, sparked her interest in local and industrial history. She has been on the museum, archives, and education staff of the D&L since 2012, though she was associated with the museum for many years before through her friendship with her mentor Lance Metz. Martha was a researcher and editor at Rodale from 1980 to 2001. She has written four books for Arcadia’s Images of America series and three books for Lucent Books’ school editions, on the histories of swimming, auto racing, and Vatican City. She is the author of the industrial history of the D&L Corridor titled Geography, Geology, and Genius: how coal and canals ignited the American Industrial Revolution.
