Field Trips, In-Class Programs, and Teacher Workshops

A wide variety of field trip and in class programs can be arranged to be presented by Lehigh Gap Nature Center Staff to your group. The list of programs and field trips is constantly evolving with the needs of the schools. Each of these programs was designed in conjunction with teachers. We will be happy to custom design new programs and field trips along with teachers.

Lehigh Gap Nature Center Field Trip Topics

Pre-K through Grade 1

  • Nature Walk – nature appreciation, incidental learning as we walk the paths through the gardens, around the Osprey House and along the river
  • Live Animals – Pond critters, live snake
  • Helping wildlife in at your home – how you can help birds, butterflies, etc. in your back yard.
  • Reading programs – reading a nature related book to the students and answering question about nature; encouraging reading on their own through book borrowing

Grade 2-6

  • Ecosystem Comparison – ecosystem ecology, comparison chart for five ecosystems, discussion questions (two levels – Grade 2-3, Grade 4-6)
  • Geology Hike – a walk through the Gap looking at formations that illustrate plate tectonics, sedimentary rock formation, erosion; also rock classification activity (can be included in Ecology Walk)
  • Ecology Walk – Lehigh Gap Restoration Project, all basic ecological topics covered (11 stations with worksheets on two levels – Middle/High School)
  • Stations (Grades 2-3)
    • Classifying Rocks – collecting and classifying rocks to learn about classification and basic geology (Grade 2-3
    • Bird Chorus – learning bird songs of common speciesClass Visit to LGNC
    • Leaf Identification – matching shapes to identify leaves; basic types of trees
    • Pond Water – examining pond water through microscopes and looking at macroscopic pond critters in the lab
    • Nature Walk – looking for birds, butterflies, etc.
    • Helpful/Harmful – things that are good or bad for birds/wildlife
    • Watershed demo – with models to explain the concept of a watershed
  • Stations (Grades 4-6)
    • Food Chain/Web/Pyramid – simulation of these concepts with students playing the role of organisms
    • Watershed and Land Uses – simulation game to teach the concepts of watershed and how human land use affects watersheds and water quality
    • Water Cycle – simulation game to teach or review the water cycle
    • Pond water
    • Nature Walk – exploring higher order concepts than with younger students
    • Habitat/Predator/Prey – simulation game to explain the concepts and emphasize important role of predators
    • Bird Study – four activity worksheets, beaks and feet, bird chart
  • Birds of Prey – Raptor migration, raptor adaptations, draw a hawk, raptor identification, field trip to Bake Oven Knob
  • Forest Ecology – can be done in conjunction with Birds of Prey field trip
  • Pond Study – nets, water quality equipment, microscopes (Grades 4-6)
  • Bug Safari – looking for insects of all kinds

Grades 5-8

  • Ecology Walk – Lehigh Gap Restoration Project, all basic ecological topics covered (11 stations with worksheets on two levels – Middle/High School)

  • Lehigh Gap History – A walking tour exploring the history of Lehigh Gap and surroundings
  • River/Stream Ecology –nets, water quality equipment, macroinvertebrate biodiversity index, pond/stream comparison
  • Pond Study – nets, water quality equipment, microscopes
  • Birds of Prey – Raptor migration, raptor adaptations, draw a hawk, raptor identification, field trip to Bake Oven Knob
  • Invasive species – collect samples, characteristics, create an invasive species, invasive species activity
  • Pollination – uses habitat gardens, cameras, computers to study pollination, pollinators, and plant reproduction
  • Trees – tree activity, tree identification with keys, measuring tree diversity
  • Bug Safari/Monarch Butterfly Tagging – looking for insects of all kinds and in September, tagging Monarchs

High School/College

  • Succession plots – field activity, collecting data, plant identification
  • River/Stream Ecology – notes, worksheet, nets, water quality equipment, macroinvertebrate biodiversity index, pond/stream comparisonCollege Field Trip
  • Percent Cover Analysis – field lab with data collection and math
  • Invasive species – collect samples, characteristics, create an invasive species, invasive species activity
  • Raptor Migration/Forest Ecology – field trip to Bake Oven Knob to observe raptor migration and study forest ecology (Raptor migration, autumn only)
  • Trees – tree structure and physiology, tree identification
  • Lehigh Gap History – A walking tour exploring the history of Lehigh Gap and surroundings

Fee Schedule:

  • Field Trips: First hour — $50; additional hours $25 (Note that a typical trip lasts 2-3 hours.)
  • In Class programs for students: $30/hr. from time leaving LGNC to return plus mileage reimbursement at IRS rate
  • Teacher Workshops/In-service: Half day – $250, Full day – $400
  • Curriculum Development and Leadership: $50/hour plus mileage reimbursement at IRS rate
  • Longer Term Rates/Multiple Class Rates – are negotiable
