Virtual Speaker Series — Diane Husic, Ph.D.

Custodians of our Ecosystems: Women, Raptors, and Unsettling Words” — Diane Husic Ph.D.

Scientists and writers like Rachel Carson, Theo Colburn, and Sandra Steingraber have called attention to environmental pollutants and the negative impacts that they have on ecosystems and human health. Because of biomagnification and as apex predators, raptors (birds of prey) are also bioindicators of problems in our environment. Oddly, these harbingers – strong, intelligent women, birds of prey, and words that tell the story of how we are destroying our home (Earth) – make some people uncomfortable. But they are the very things that we need to keep our ecosystems healthy and functioning. On Thursday, December 17, Moravian College’s Dr. Diane Husic will discuss some of these ideas and explore the question of “What science, words, metaphors and other expressions are needed to address today’s environmental challenges?”

Dr. Husic is Vice President of LGNC’s Board of Directors and Dean of Moravian College’s School of Natural and Health Sciences.

About Our Virtual Speaker Series:

Typically, our Speaker Series events are held in-person, but this year we are going to be doing things a little bit differently. Speakers will be conducting their talks “virtually” through Zoom. Following registration, you will be provided with a link for a Zoom conference, which will give you access to the event at the scheduled date and time.

If you are familiar with and already have Zoom installed on your device, then you are all set. If you have never used Zoom before, no worries! Upon clicking the link, Zoom will automatically install itself and you’ll be ready to go! Zoom is a small, safe application that allows you to participate in video conferencing events such as this one! While a camera and microphone are not essential to view the presentation, they do make interaction with the speaker possible during question and answer sessions. Click here for more information on Zoom: https://zoom.us.

We hope to see virtually!
