Migration Fest 2019 @ Lehigh Gap Nature Center

Activities include:

  • Field trip to the Bake Oven Knob Hawk Watch to observe migrating birds along the Kittatinny Ridge
  • Monarch butterfly programs
  • Guided nature walks and programs on the Lehigh Gap Wildlife Refuge
  • Artisans selling and demonstrating their crafts
  • Crafts for children

Schedule of Events:

  • 9:00 a.m. — Family Bird Walk. Join us for a beginner bird walk around the Osprey House. Binoculars will be provided.
  • 10:00 a.m. — Hawk Watching at Bake Oven Knob. Experience migration up close and get a bird’s eye view of the Lehigh Valley on a field trip to Bake Oven Knob. Register at the Osprey House and drive to the Bake Oven Knob parking lot as a group.
  • 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. — Monarch Tagging and Insect Safari. Search for butterflies and other bugs in the gardens and meadows around the Nature Center! Tag monarch butterflies to help scientists better understand the mysteries of butterfly migration. Insect nets will be provided.
  • 1:00 p.m. — Live Animal Presentation. Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will host a live animal program showcasing some of the cool creatures that live on the Lehigh River Watershed!
  • 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. — Family-friendly exhibits and activities at the Osprey House (front porch, conference room, other rooms):
    • Raptor ID and monarch butterfly information
    • Migration exhibit
    • Watershed exhibit
  • 3:00-4:00 p.m. — Open House. LGNC staff and volunteers will be available to lead a tour of the Osprey House, and to answer questions about LGNC!
  • 4:00-5:00 p.m. — Keynote Speaker: Fred Stine. Spanning 300 miles, the Delaware River Basin provides drinking water for 15 million people – about 5 percent of the nation’s population. Serving as Citizen Action Coordinator for the Delaware Riverkeeper for 24 years, Fred will discuss his organization’s work protecting the River and the many values a healthy river provides, including the benefits of riparian buffers, importance of protecting habitat to maintain biodiversity, and the economic and recreational value the Delaware River provides for the four states that comprise its watershed.
