Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Informational Zoom Session

Are you interested in counting birds for science while enjoying scenic views? If so, we invite you to learn about volunteer opportunities at the Bake Oven Knob Hawk Watch during an informational Zoom session on Wednesday, August 9!

About the Hawk Count:
For over 60 years, volunteers have counted migrating birds of prey at Bake Oven Knob near Germansville, PA. From their perch atop the Kittatinny Ridge, LGNC’s Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Team records an average of 10,000+ migrating birds of prey each autumn! These observations are reported to the Hawk Migration Association of North America to help scientists study bird populations and migration patterns.

LGNC welcomes new volunteers to join our Hawk Count Team this year. The Hawk Count runs daily during daylight hours from August 15 through the end of November. During this timeframe, you may volunteer as little or as much as you like. If you are not comfortable identifying or recording birds, you can still help with the count. You do not need to be an experienced birder or hawk watcher to contribute!

How to Get Involved:
On Wednesday, August 9, 2023 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., LGNC will be hosting an informational Zoom session for anyone who would like to learn more about the hawk count. This program will highlight the history of the count, as well as opportunities to volunteer. We will also review how we count migrating raptors and provide some bird identification tips.

If you are interested in attending the Zoom session or getting involved with the Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Team, please email LGNC Director, Chad Schwartz, at chad.schwartz@lgnc.org.
