Uganda: The Wildlife and Challenges of the 'Pearl of Africa'

Drs. David Husic and Diane Husic

Uganda is a land with extraordinary bird and mammal, especially primates, diversity. Winston Churchill described the splendor of the country in his 1908 book:
“For magnificence, for variety of form and color, for profusion of brilliant life — bird, insect, reptile, beast — for vast scale — Uganda is truly “the Pearl of Africa.”

Conservation of these resources faces a number of challenges including extreme poverty, over-population, and the impacts of climate change. Ecotourism, which can help address both conservation and a country’s economy, had been hindered by lingering fears and images from the days of violent rule under Idi Amin, Al-Shabaab suicide bombings in 2010, and periodic outbreaks of Ebola. However, travel to this amazing country is becoming increasingly popular. We will share our experiences and photos from our summer 2017 time in what Lonely Planet named as the “Best Country to Visit” in 2012.
